I just heard this excellent line: “Don’t send your ducks to eagle school. It will not help. It won’t help at all. They will remain ducks although they have a badge, a certificate and a hat with an eagle on it.”

Let me write a few lines on this topic. I have already mentioned it in my previous posts, but here I go again. The subject is: MOTIVATION.

Let’s get the most important thing out of the way first. Motivated people are not trained, they are found!

George-Pankewytch-katdaned-eagleduckTherefore forget about motivating someone. They have to have self motivation, otherwise you will kill yourself trying.

Find good people who are self motivated, who’s internal engine is running.

Everything else is a benefit and a bonus. The lunch tickets, number of days of holidays, training, cars, phones, gym permits, nice offices.… etc. None of these things will ever make people motivated. They are stimulants. Nothing more, nothing less. They do not last. They become a standard and lose their value after some time.

Oh, and last but not least, if you ask: and what about the career planning, isn’t that an important thing? Doesn’t that motivate people?” A good question. Career planning falls into a category of self-actualisation. A big one. A big deal.

It is a big deal. Guess who gets promoted, grows and truely wins (translation — has results, overcomes obstacles and brings value continuously)? Self motivated people.

The bottom line is: you don’t need a super sophisticated know-how or an external consultant to make your people motivated. Get the self-motivated people to start with. People who are inspired to become eagles and then train them to get even better in what they do while using their internal fire. That is the only way to a long lasting motivation.

Thank you, Jim Rohn, for the reminder :)
